Chemicals Used in Coagulation and Flocculation

Coagulation and flocculation are critical components of both drinking water and wastewater treatment. The chemicals used in coagulation and flocculation facilitate the entire water treatment process. The negative electrical charge on particles gets neutralised during coagulation treatment, destabilising the forces that keep colloidal particles apart.

Coagulants used in water treatment are made up of positively charged particles that neutralise the charge when mixed with water. To remove suspended solids from water, inorganic, organic, or a mixture of coagulant types are commonly used.

The chemicals used in coagulation and flocculation include iron salts, aluminium salts, or polymers added to the source water to facilitate bonding between particulates. Coagulants operate by causing a chemical reaction in which the negative charges that start causing particles to repulse each other get removed.

Metal coagulants are classified into two categories: those based on aluminium and those based on iron and chemicals used in coagulation and flocculation. Aluminium sulphate, aluminium chloride, and sodium aluminate are aluminium coagulants. Iron coagulants are iron, ferrous sulphate, ferric sulphate, ferrous sulphate, ferric sulphate, ferric chloride sulphate, and ferric chloride sulphate. Hydrated lime and magnesium carbonate are two other chemicals used in coagulation and flocculation.

Our team lets the coagulant-source water solution flocculate during a slow stirring process. Particles strike and clot together due to the water churning, forming more prominent and more easy-to-remove lumps, or “flocs.”

The process necessitates the chemical expertise of source water features to guarantee that an efficient coagulant mix is used. These treatment methods are rendered ineffective due to the use of inefficient coagulants. Hence, we ensure that chemicals used in coagulation and flocculation are appropriate.
Coagulation/ultimate flocculation’s efficiency is also directly related to the quality of the filtration process to which it is teamed.
